Yes. It's true. The ER has now become our second home (well, I guess third since we are in limbo between two apartments till the end of the month). I'm thinking we could write books about all our visits (all within almost a year too!). Here's the synopsis for each one:
Book One: A few weeks before the Barneys leave for two relaxing summer classes in Brazil (haha, yeah right) on a Sunday evening, Summer, the only child at the time, and one who is usually full of spirit and life, sat still in her father's lap. This phenomenon, never seen before, stirred in her parents the suspicion that something was wrong. Her temperature alerted them to take haste to the ER. Will the test results reveal anything? Will her parent survive the long night?
Spoiler Alert: No, the test results did not reveal anything, and yes, we did. And it sure was long.
Book Two: Not ten months later, Brittney is awoken by Rhett at five in the morning due to intense stomach pain. He was coupled over in pain, and could barely stand. Alarmed, Brittney called the babysitter on call (Heather) :) and Brittney and Rhett left immediately to the ER (after scraping frosted windows). Heather hastily arrived to stay with the girls. The unbearable pain was dramatically more pain than he had ever felt before. Will the pain be relieved? What was the cause of the pain? And more importantly, will Heather survive the girls?
Spoiler Alert: Yes, the pain was relieved with a shot of morphine, and we never found out what was the cause. The doctor suggested it was a virus and gave medication to help with the pain, but other than that, that was it. And yes, Heather survived the girls. (She's great like that.)
Book Three: It's a beautiful Sunday afternoon in April. The girls are dolled up in their dresses for church, Brittney's heading to choir practice in the YW room, and Rhett's getting ready to head home. Claire is wrapped up in her blankets, like she so loves, and Rhett begins the short journey home from church with both girls in his arms. Summer sees a bird, and excitedly pushes Claire to get a better look. Claire unravels from the blanket falling to the pavement, hitting her head. Rhett picks up Claire, leaves Summer with a bystander (thanks Lovena!), and runs in to get Brittney. They quickly walk home (across the street), pile in the car, and head to the ER again. Will Claire survive the IV's? Will she have any permanent damage? Will the carrots in the crock pot burn?
Spoiler Alert: No, Claire did not survive the IV attempts. They tried three times, and finally did an IO into the bone in her leg to give her some morphine to relieve the pain. After a CT scan, they determined there was a little bleeding under the skull, along with a small skull fracture. They transferred us to another hospital where we stayed overnight for the nurses to monitor her. She has shown no signs of any permanent damage--still our happy, little Claire. And yes, the carrots burned.
Prequel to Book Four: Summer gets her adenoids out, tubes in her ears, and her tongue clipped. Other than killer stinky breath, she is doing really well. She can breath better (now through her nose and not her mouth), and can sleep better too. Her words are sounding more like words, and we can understand her a lot better. It was a very beneficial surgery.
Book Four: Just a little more than a week after her visit to the ENT, Summer and her family are at a museum in Missoula--meeting the soon-to-be (STB) newest member of the family: Tanner Wray (fiance of Katelyn). As her parents, aunt, and STB uncle were admiring the artwork on the wall, Summer eyed the display in the center of the room--a tempting large marble ball (the size of a tub of butter), covered in razer blades. Of course, her pure spirit sees past the bad (the blades), and only sees the good (the ball), so she reaches for it. Her parents turn to see her as she says, "Owie," and drops the ball, as one of the razer blades slices her hand as it goes down. Rhett is quick to action, grabs her as the blood begins to come, and takes her to the bathroom to wash it up. He sees the open wound--a large gash, gaping open--and knows . . . stitches. He alerts the family, they get directions to the nearest ER, and head off to another visit to the doctor, needles, and, yes waiting. Will they have to wait two hours to get her stitches in? Will the nurse think it's a serious wound and alert the doctor? Will Kate and Tanner decide to spend the night in Spokane since most of their bonding time with the Barneys was spent at the ER?
Spoiler Alert: Yes, we had to wait two hours to get stitches in because the nurse thought it wasn't that big of a deal. But Summer did great, and only cried when the doctor numbed her hand and when he put the eight stitches in. (She cried, and screamed, and yelled, "Done! Done!" to be exact.) But she has been one tough cookie and has been doing really well. She doesn't like to look at the wound (when we change the bandage), but other than that, she has been using her fingers and hand to play and do whatever she needs to. The doctor said there might be nerve damage, but we had it checked today, and he said it looks really good. (Whew! I was worried about her hitting those octaves!) She is doing great (thanks to some balloons and oreos from Grandma and Grandpa K!), and will probaby get her stitches out on Monday.
The only picture of the wound we got was from Rhett's phone. Summer didn't like to have the wound exposed, so he snapped it right after the doctor looked at it and when he went to go get the nurse for the stitches. It's a little blurry, but you can kind of see how deep and fleshy it is.
Here she is at the hospital after it got bandaged up.
And here's a picture of the stitches the next day when we were changing the bandage.
Whoever knew that Brittney's life, void of the ER, would dramatically change after marrying into the Barney family??? (And if anyone did, why didn't you warn me?!?)
Up Next: More of Summer's exceptional photography skills, her ingenious "apple juice," and Thug Claire.

The Latest at the Barney Home
Rhett: Rhett has just finished finals for his second year at law school. Woohoo! We are so proud of him and how hard he works for us. He is a dedicated student, all the while being a dedicated father. We love him for that. Now that finals are over, he will start working full time in Couer D'Alene where he will be able to do trademark work (his preferred field). He has been getting quite the compliments from his employer--she says he's doing impressive work and she's happy to be working with him.
He has also just finished three sessions of acupuncture for his narcolepsy. There are no claims that acupuncture helps narcoleptics, but we thought we'd give it a try. It's kind of hard to tell whether it's had any affects or not--with the end of the school year and his load being lifted, he feels better anyway. We might try it again someday, we'll see.
Brittney: Brittney now has almost six piano students (a sibling starting soon, and another prospect getting finalized for June). She's loving giving lessons again and is currently working on a piano recital for the end of June. She is also still keeping busy making books, doing a little writing, attempting to cook healthy meals, trying to keep the kids (Rhett included) out of the ER, and starting Tot School for Summer (more on that later).
Summer: Summer just recently had her adenoids out, her tongue clipped, and tubes put in her ears. Here is a night-before picture. In her new monkey jammies, monkey blanket, and stuffed monkeys, she was ready to go! Thanks to everyone for your thoughtful gifts for her to help her through it!
Here's the after pictures. This was after the surgery at 8:30 in the morning, and then a nap when she got home. She ate quite a few fruit juice popsicles and watched quite a few nursery rhymes on YouTube to help her feel better.
She's feeling a lot better now, but absolutely hates it when we have to put her ear drops in. She's tough, though, and we are proud of her bouncing back so quickly.
Her vocabulary is continually growing, and she surprises us every day with new words. It always happens like this: she'll say something, Rhett and I will look at each other, "Did you teach her that?!?" "No, did you?!?" "No. Summer, where did you learn that?!?" For example, she says "pony" for ponytail, "dirt" and "dirty," "outside," "airplane," "swing" (for our hammock), and "popsicle." She is growing up so much!
One day when we went to get Summer from nursery, the leaders told us that the kids had been lining up at one end of the room, saying, "Ready . . . go!" and then running to the other side. Summer included. She did it one night when we had some friends over. This was a funny clip because she almost knocked herself out running into the corner of the counter, but just barely knicked it.
She ran back and forth, back and forth so many times that she had to stop a few times to catch her breath. It was so funny.
And since you got to see her photography skills, we thought we'd also share her filming skills. (Warning: It becomes quite uneventful after the close up of her nostril at a minute and fifteen seconds!)
Claire: Claire is on fire with her tummy time! No longer is it a painful experience because she dislikes it; it's painful because she's getting rug burns on her knees! That's right. She is cruising around all over the place, leaving little surprise spit ups for us to find with our bare feet. Her favorite thing to do is head to the edge of the rug and suck on the fringe. Yuck! It kills me every time I see a handful of the fringe in her mouth. I'll move her far away from it, but the next thing I know, she's scooched her way back there and is chowing down again. Here are some clips of the beginning of her scooching. (She often gets distracted with the camera and forgets what she's doing, so these aren't the best clips, but you get the idea.)
Sometimes, she just rests her head in her blankets. I love it because I'll call her name, and she'll do a slow-mo spaz response. I think it's so funny.
Claire had a few follow up doctor appointments where they checked her to make sure she was doing okay from her fall. They said she looks great. We are so blessed for such a quick recovery!

Grab some popcorn, sit back, and enjoy . . .
Because Claire has so much gas, I often will sing to her while doing the bicycle with her legs. Here's Summer doing it:
I got some new piano music for my students that has a cd to accompany the pianist. Heather came over and was playing along. Summer decided to join her. You can't hear Summer playing very well (with the cd, Heather's playing, and Claire's huge growl in it) but I love Summer's cheering at the very end.
One day, I started "Mm mmmm"-ing to Claire, and she thought it was so funny. She laughed and laughed. I tried to catch a little of it on camera. Summer thought it was pretty funny too.
And this one is so funny. I wish I knew how to turn it right side up. Sorry! But for some reason, Summer thinks her underwear fits perfectly as hats, so she often wears them around like hats. Here she is, saying it's a hat, putting it on like a hat, counting, motioning for the phone (hand on ear), and then doing some sort of jig. She does it so fast it almost looks like it's in fast forward! (And yes, her "hat" underwear is clean!)

The Injured One
As many know, Claire tumbled last Sunday, ending up in the ER and being transferred via ambulance to a better pediatrics hospital for an overnight stay. After poking both hands and a foot to try to get an IV in, they decided to do an IO where they drill into her leg bone to give her some pain killer. We had to step out of the room for that, and it was painful to hear her cry. According to the CT scan, she had a parietal skull fracture and a little bleeding underneath the skull. The doctors weren't too concerned with the fracture because her skull is pretty much suturing away right now anyway. The main concern was the bleeding. So they kept monitors on her all night as she slept away in her hospital crib and me on the couch/bed. In the morning, her second CT scan came back and they said it looked like there was no more more bleeding, and as long as she was acting okay, she was okay. Well, she was just smiling and laughing, rolling over, and sucking on wires and toes (her own). Plus she still had that stinky gas (a sure sign she was okay!). She has not been fussy or grumpy or anything since Monday. (Is it possible the morphine has lasted this long???) She's been great. And there haven't been any signs to worry about. It has been a great blessing.
Here are some pictures of her swollen head. I don't know if the camera really captures the full effect of what she looked like.
And here is what she looks like now. The swelling has gone down completely, and there is only a light green bruise down her left cheek. If you didn't know anything had happened, you wouldn't even be able to tell.
Here are some pictures of Summer painting. She had a good time (especially sliding around the bathtub in it).
